A busy dining room is one of the most misleading sights in business.
Every table full. Tickets flying. It looks like success.
Then the month closes, and the numbers tell a different story.
What revenue can hide
Money coming in can make almost anything look healthy, temporarily. Underneath it can sit:
- Bad margins
- Weak systems
- Poor leadership
- Founder dependency
- Operational chaos
- An exhausted team
Revenue doesn't fix any of these. It funds them. And it gives everyone permission not to look.
“The question isn't simply "Are we making money?" The better question may be: what kind of machine is producing it?”
Scale reveals what small hid
When a business is small, the founder's energy covers the cracks. Growth removes that cover. More volume doesn't create the problems. It exposes them faster and more expensively.
That's why some growth is actually bloat. More sales, more staff, more stress, and somehow less profit and less freedom.
A better review
Look past the top line once a month and ask:
- What did it cost us to earn this?
- Who carried the weight?
- Would this still work if we doubled tomorrow?
A healthy business can answer those questions without flinching.
